Dan Lane

What does your good eye see?
Kids doing impossible things. A farmer’s market in the distance.

How do you tell stories of good people?
First from my heart, then with lenses, sweet music and scaling mountains of footage to find a story at the top. I think of video as a tool, not just something to be watched, but something to be used. My job is to find creative ways to get people engaged with things they may not (yet) care passionately about.

Where were you before GEV?
Waiting to be inspired. I graduated from Syracuse University’s Newhouse School in Television, Radio and Film. After working in film, television and video production in capacities including shooting, editing and directing, I moved to the corporate and industrial world, working for brands like Foot Locker, Google and Starwood Hotels. I grew up in Ithaca, NY the son of a Professor of Entrepreneurship and an Entrepreneur (the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree).

Whose story must be told?
The rich, diverse and brave millions of homeless men, women and children of America. Anyone who wakes up in the morning and decides the way out of poverty is starting his or her own business.

What does your good eye see?
A magical world where non-profits have so many donations they can’t do good things fast enough AND where teaching is the most highly-paid and sought after job around.

How do you tell stories of good people?
I plan, I organize, I strategize.  I use every ounce of nerdy energy in my body to brainstorm creative ideas, and then put those ideas into motion.

Where were you before GEV?
Cutting my teeth at small, independent production companies around NYC, learning the ins and outs of the film and video production world.  GEV is my first chance to use the double major I received from Barnard College in Film Studies & Political Science to use visual storytelling to impact a large range of issues.

Whose story must be told?
There are so many! I’m constantly inspired by the stories we uncover through our work. It’s my goal to bring these beautiful & important tales out into the world… for everyone to see.
